With all these wedding and engagement posts, I feel the need to spice it up a bit on the blog today! Feast your eyes on burlesque dancer Ula Uberbusen, formerly of Salome Cabaret in Knoxville, and currently a resident of Brooklyn, NY. While we all miss her down here in the South, we’re all delighted that she is enjoying the Big Apple and making the most of being involved in their burlesque scene. Ula came to the studio and had her hair done by Shana Michelle Taylor, and impressively did her own makeup for the shoot. We had a lot of fun playing dress up with her stage costumes and in the studio’s wardrobe closet. With some Hollywood-style shots, a few pin ups, and lots of sexy boudoir photos, Ula’s session is one-of-a-kind!

So excited to share these fun and flirty photographs! Bowling Green burlesque dancers Honey Duvet and Bebe Brown came to La Photographie studios in Nashville to immortalize their sister act! While playing dress up, the two ladies also channeled different looks from classic Hollywood starlet to retro Josephine Baker. We had a blast and I can’t wait to see these gorgeous girls perform!

It was my distinct pleasure to photograph the Yard Dogs Road Show performance at Exit/In in Nashville on September 29. I’ve seen the group perform in Nashville before, and they are incredible! Yard Dogs are a group of traveling performers offering burlesque, vaudeville, cabaret, and sideshow numbers all backed by a carnivalesque band of gypsies. It is truly a sight to see. In case you missed it, or if you just want to relive the magical evening, here are my best shots for you to enjoy.
Adventures at Bonnaroo – Part Two: Dr. Sketchy’s

For those of you who’ve never heard of Dr Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, head over to their web site to get a good idea of how the idea started. Our local Nashville chapter is spearheaded by Miss Lolly Pop and her husband Larry the Panty Boy, who are the same dynamic duo who present Miss Lolly Pop’s Coterie at Bonnaroo. This year, the Bonnaroo Festival decided to feature Dr Sketchy’s at the Academy Tent. Dr Sketchy’s held nightly sessions for Bonnaroo attendees, and the sessions were very well-attended. White Lines paper donated the sketch pads, and members of Miss Lolly Pop’s Coterie dressed in interesting costumes and posed for artists and wannabes alike. Here are some of my best shots from Dr Sketchy’s!
Blind Tiger Dames: Du Val de Vire
I was honored to be the exclusive photographer for the Blind Tiger Dames inaugural show, Du Val de Vire. The show was held on Friday February 12 at the Belcourt Theater, and promised to be a spectacle rarely seen in the way of Nashville performing arts. It did not disappoint. Here are some of my best shots. Note: these photographs are copyrighted and cannot be used in any medium without express permission from the photographer. Please email or call if you are interested in using these photographs in print, publication, or online.
Thank you to the performers, and especially to Sunny, who trusted me to capture the most exciting moments of the show. I know she and Laura put so much work into designing the show, and the performers worked day and night to bring the best possible performance to the Nashville audience. Thank you again!
Pop Art 2009
I’ve worked with Frankie Apple of Music City Burlesque several times. She is a superb performer, and when I learned that her next number would be based on Edie Sedgwick and Andy Warhol, I insisted that we photograph her transformation. She performed the number Friday night at the Belcourt, and the crowd was wowed! Here are our best shots.
Midnight Frolic
Last fall I found a book on Amazon called Jazz Age Beauties: The Lost Collection of Ziegfeld Photographer Alfred Cheney Johnston and immediately added it to my wish list.
Lo and behold, I received this book for Christmas from my seriously awesome mother-in-law. I spent the entirety of Christmas day leafing through this book and gasping over the unbelievably gorgeous and classy photographs taken of the Ziegfeld Follies in the 1920’s. I started showing the book to others and getting a positive response. So in the vein of Pinned Up!, I decided to start offering twenties-style portraits. Since I work so frequently with Music City Burlesque, it was a natural second step to get them involved. Behold the beauty of Music City Burlesque, re-imagined as flappers from the Jazz Age.
Some hair and makeup by Eryk Datura and Cali DeVaney. Special thank you to Venus and Mars: The Showroom, Chuck Arlund, Lucy De Lovely, and models Lux, Lolly, Vera, Bella, Monique, and Frankie.
Tribute
Last week I collaborated with Lux-O-Matic from Music City Burlesque and Datura Glamour Couture to create this Bettie Page Tribute.
MJ
Musician Molly John and I had a great photoshoot just before Christmas. Click here to listen to her music on myspace. Her CD release party is this Friday at Bongo Java.
Lovely Dancer
Emeline is a professional bellydancer living in New York City. While visiting Nashville, she hired me to take some professional pictures that she could use in promotional materials. We shot at Centennial Park, which was the perfect setting, on a stormy day. Although we had to spend some time waiting inside my car for the rain to end, it was well worth it.
Clowning Around
Dune is a local actor/model who needed some portfolio updates. We decided to do something conceptual, and settled on a sad clown character. Dune and I met at R Squared Salon on 17th Ave, where Amber Wilburn did the hair and makeup. She did a great job of capturing a subtle, but very sad clown face without using tons of greasepaint. Dune brought some clothes from the Goodwill and we headed out to shoot. Dune and Amber were both totally awesome, and I’ll definitely be working with them again.
